Bart Verschoor – Atelier Bart

I Bart Verschoor 1965 born in Loenersloot near Amsterdam have been more outside than inside exploring what to do on land or on the water, with a result of building In my childhood all sorts driving, floating or even flying. Sailing with my parent’s, friends and cousins was present almost all free time. I have been going to school up to 17 years old and loving to be in nature was developed in my childhood. Olympic windsurfing became most important for me in life in my twenty’s loving to be out on the water, learning about strategy, tactics, metrologie and so on. Followed by yacht racing worldwide and hightech composite yachtbuilding in England. Family live and being self imployed started in Amsterdam in the year 1991. After a short period of boatbuilding, importing a sailboat from New Zealand and refitting sailing yachts in the Netherlands, building furniture and house interiors got then my new born attention as a profession. I needed to go back in to the more craft skills building in wood.

Next i have found the opportunity to design and build an entire building. From then on the architecture became my new subject for the profession based on selfstudy and the building by my self including all disaplines. Designing in balance with nature is very important to me regarding material use and the overall connection of the building with nature. In summertime i spend free time sailing with my new 2020 wooden boat build by the craftsmen from Norway. The year 2020 – 2021 will be a year of studying my personal plan where the permaculture meets architecture to serve a self sufficient – autonomous live.

This design is in relation with the light house free work design 2006. The sun in winter can heat the home hole day longe. In summer the terrasroof is giving shade. The tree stands in the center of the circle orientated to the south for a practical reason giving shade in summer and for a symbolic reason as the tree of life in the middle of the universe.

The building is designed to be build in wood only, including the ground floor lifted from the field.

Finding the willing people to learn how to build the wooden home along the modern way ment al lot to me. With a big smile on their face the have been building from scratch to the end in six months. After designing the home i have first trained them preparing the work knowing all details of all disaplins. The result is top quality. Cros laminated timber walls and floors -unidirectional laminated timber glass facade, wood fiber insulation all as the Main Street material use. The design came along thinking of a atelier on the Montmartre in Paris facing the north with all the glass. The rectangular is fitting the plastic number I thank Dom Hans van der Laan.

A pioneering hands on learning by doing approach. In the end to find a highly energie efficiency ( finally € 13 electricity a month heating cost )way heating tapwater and home warming. A censored and computer managed installation was changed to the use of only thermal mechanical working valves to reach a more controllable setup. In the near future more lotech solutions can probably result in € 0,- heating cost.

Designing the home thinking in using CLT als material use gave me big advantages considering constructing opportunity’s and it was in Holland early days in building with cros laminated timber. It gave me a big boost realising i was doing good with this eco friendly material. The design i have made thinking of monastery’s – Sober – cool in summer – grond floor and Scandinavian yachtclubs all in wood – terras with big overhang for shade in summer – panoramic view from the Living room on the second floor. The need for green roofs – creating a roofgarden and a growing vegetables garden above the garage. Building the home mainly done with my own hands, partly done by helping friends and family and partly done by some professionals like the crane driver during compiling the CLT elements in one week.
